Social media use juxtaposes employees’ right to privacy and employers’ rights to manage operations and productivity. This often contentious intersection requires managers and supervisors to understand and effectively manage the risks employer and employee social media use poses within the four corners of the workplace and beyond.

Learning Objectives
- Privacy Primer. The types of employee privacy interests the law recognizes; the boundaries of the privacy an employee can reasonably expect in the workplace; and the management risks that both employer and employee use of social media poses.
- Social Media Management. What amounts to improper workplace and off-duty social media use; the employers’ right to monitor employees’ workplace online activity and public social media; and when employers can discipline employees for improper workplace and off-duty social media use.
- Social Media Policies. The benefits of a distinct social media policy; the key elements of an effective social media policy; and managers’ and supervisors’ roles in implementing them.
