“Do the unexpected. Take 20 minutes out of your day, do what young people all over the world are dying to do: vote.” Rick Mercer (hailing originally from Newfoundland and Labrador) said this in relation to young voters; many, however, agree the importance of the right to vote and of exercising that right applies equally to voters of all ages. The law recognizes and protects the importance of the right to vote by granting certain rights to employees – and imposing certain obligations on employers – to ensure they have a meaningful opportunity to exercise their voting rights. Here are employees’ rights and employers’ obligations in relation to employees’ right to vote in a Canadian federal election and in provincial elections in each Atlantic Canadian province.
Voting in a Federal Election. The Canada Elections Act sets out employees’ rights and employers’ obligations in relation to voting in federal elections:
Voting in a New Brunswick Provincial Election. The New Brunswick Elections Act sets out employees’ rights and employers’ obligations in relation to voting in N.B. provincial elections:
Voting in a Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Election. The Newfoundland & Labrador Elections Act, 1991 sets out employees’ rights and employers’ obligations in relation to voting in N.L. provincial elections:
Voting in a Prince Edward Island Provincial Election. The Prince Edward Island Election Act sets out employees’ rights and employers’ obligations in relation to voting in P.E.I. provincial elections:
