McInnes Cooper makes waves as it announces its formal oceans initiative. The oceans initiative includes a team of dedicated lawyers focusing their legal practice on related businesses on the crest of the advancing ocean economy.
“Our team will assist clients in realizing the opportunities that are shaping across Canadian and international waters,’ said Hugh Wright, CEO and Managing Partner of McInnes Cooper. “It’s an effective way to promote innovation and engage with like-minded players that surface from Canada’s Ocean Supercluster,” he added.
Partner Daniel Watt leads McInnes Cooper’s ocean economy team. The firm has also recently hired Donald A. MacLeod (formally of Secunda Marine, later acquired by J. Ray McDermott Canada), whose knowledge of the marine sector makes him a strong complement to this team.
Other key team members include Sara Mahaney, who co-authored (with Daniel Watt) an influential white paper, Charting a Course for Good Governance of Canada’s Emerging Ocean Economy: Offshore Aquaculture and Ocean-based Renewable Energy, and David Hearn, who has extensive experience in commercial and litigation issues for the fishing industry. Lawyers Wylie Spicer, QC and Elizabeth McIsaac bring internationally recognized depth of experience to the niche area of seabed mining.
“There’s tremendous potential ahead. Our work focuses on helping the ocean economy thrive in a sustainable manner,” said Daniel Watt. “We’re discovering connections between the evolving regulatory regimes, advancing technologies and our clients’ daily ocean resource activities.”
Based in Atlantic Canada, McInnes Cooper has a deep understanding of the Canadian and international regulatory framework at all levels, advising industry clients and regulatory bodies on law and policy across the globe. The firm has developed advisory guides for offshore decommissioning oil & gas best practices and for thoughtful ocean governance. In the coming weeks, McInnes Cooper will launch its reoccurring industry update, Oceans of Opportunity. The briefing will provide insights on key opportunities and developments in the ocean economy to its subscribers. McInnes Cooper also produces its own series of publications on new and developing legal knowledge. To select relevant areas of interest, subscribe at mcinnescooper.com/subscribe/.
“McInnes Cooper’s oceans initiative is a natural progression for our firm. We’ve been at the forefront of ocean-related legal work since our founding in 1859,” said Hugh Wright. “It’s a large part of the value we provide for many of our clients.”
McInnes Cooper presents at conferences such as the International Seabed Mining, Underwater Mining Conference, and the annual World Ocean Council’s Sustainable Ocean Summit.
