McInnes Cooper’s medical legal partnership with the IWK Health Centre and the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (LISNS) was featured on CBC Radio Mainstreet on Thursday, August 9th. The firm’s Collective Social Responsibility Coordinator, Andrea Hewitt, joined Social Worker Jackie Pidduck from the IWK Health Centre in an interview with CBC reporter Carolyn Ray (read CBC’s article online).
Through the IWK Family Legal Health Program (FLHP), McInnes Cooper lawyers assist qualifying IWK patients or their families who experience legal issues that affect the well-being of the patient. Melanie Comstock is a partner in our Halifax office who leads our participation in the Family Legal Health Program.
Since its inception in 2015, the FLHP has provided legal information or pro bono counsel to 64 families who would otherwise have faced barriers to accessing legal services. One third of those referrals have received free legal advice from McInnes Cooper lawyers.
In June, McInnes Cooper and the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia accepted the 2018 Award for Community Excellence from the IWK Board in recognition of our shared involvement in the Family Legal Health Program.
