HALIFAX, October 11, 2023 – McInnes Cooper proudly announces that it is the first Atlantic Canadian law firm to sign the Mindful Business Charter (MBC).

The MBC is a commitment to remove unnecessary sources of stress at work and promote healthier and more effective ways of working. There are more than 130 signatories globally, spanning the legal and financial industries. Principles of the Mindful Business Charter include:

  • Openness & respect
  • Smart meetings & communications
  • Respecting rest periods
  • Mindful delegation

The decision to sign comes as a natural progression in the MC Reimagined journey, which emphasizes growth, innovation and engagement. “To successfully achieve our ambitions, we must nurture our biggest strength: our people,” says Managing Partner Kevin Kiley. “Signing the Mindful Business Charter signifies the importance of mental health to McInnes Cooper, as well as to the practice of law. In a quickly evolving, highly connected world, it’s essential to create and respect boundaries, especially in the workplace.”

The initiative also ties into MC Mindful, the firm’s internal initiative to promote a healthier workplace. Through education sessions and mindfulness tips, MC Mindful and the MBC encourage members to consider the practical ways they can help foster a healthier work environment. Examples include connecting frequently with colleagues, assigning work inclusively, delaying messages sent after hours where possible and scheduling meetings for 25 or 50 minutes instead of 30 or 60 minutes.
