On June 17th, Halifax partner Gavin Giles, QC assumed the role of National Chair of the Canadian Red Cross at the organization’s 2017 Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg. Gavin is succeeding Sara John Fowler, a senior health care executive from Victoria, whose term as National Chair was marked with many important and defining events and initiatives: the Nepalese earthquake, the arrival of the Syrian refugees, the Fort McMurry fires and some significant governance and operational changes which the Canadian Red Cross has been undertaking. Much of this work will continue under Gavin’s term as National Chair and will also include the organization’s initiatives with respect to Canada’s indigenous peoples, the South Sudan famine, mother and child health in sub-Saharan central Africa and on-going aid to displaced peoples in parts of Syria.
Gavin’s work with the Canadian Red Cross has spanned almost two decades. He has held every senior volunteer post in the organization in both Nova Scotia and in Atlantic Canada. He was elected to the National Canadian Red Cross Board of Director in 2010 and prior to his recent election as Chair, served two years as National Vice-Chair.
McInnes Cooper is proud to play an active role and support such volunteer initiatives. Congratulations Gavin on this well deserved appointment.
