Michelle is a member of McInnes Cooper’s Litigation Business Unit.  She provides advice and representation to businesses and business leaders in the areas of risk management, dispute avoidance strategies and dispute resolution.  She is client-focused and results oriented.  Her practice mainly involves commercial matters, including contract issues, securities disputes and regulation, shareholder oppression, products liability, construction law, defamation and injunctions. Michelle also has expertise in the areas of professional liability insurance, commercial insurance, life and disability insurance, and professional regulation.  Michelle has appeared at all levels of Court in the Atlantic Provinces and at the Supreme Court of Canada. 


Michelle was recognized as a Leading Woman Lawyer in Canada when she received a Lexpert Zenith Award in 2013.  She was also nationally recognized by Benchmark Canada as Atlantic Canada’s Female Litigator of the Year 2012 and the only female finalist for Atlantic Litigator of the year 2013.  She has been recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation, product liability insurance law and personal injury litigation since 2008 and was named Halifax’s Insurance Lawyer of the year for 2014. Michelle was the only Atlantic Canadian lawyer to be listed in the 2007 Lexpert “Guide to the Leading U.S./Canada Cross-border Litigation Lawyers”. She was also named twice to Lexpert’s list of Canada’s Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 (2004 and 2006), one of only five at the time and the only one outside Toronto and New York City. Michelle is also ranked in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. Michelle is also listed under Insurance, Commercial, and Securities law on Benchmark Canada 2015 as Provincial Litigation Star.


Michelle is a member of McInnes Cooper’s Board of Directors and the Chair of the Firm’s Audit Committee.  Michelle is also Past Chair of the Firm’s Regional Recruitment Committee and Past President of the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. She taught at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law for five years and speaks regularly at professional conferences. Michelle has served on the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society’s Bar Admission Course and Annual Meeting Committees. She is a member of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, the Defence Research Institute, the Canadian Defence Lawyers Association, The Advocates’ Society, the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, Dalhousie University’s Board of Governors, chairing its Operations Committee and sitting on its Human Resources Committee.  Michelle is a former board member of the Dalhousie University Alumni Association. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys running, skiing and tennis.
