Daren is a Partner in McInnes Cooper’s Halifax, NS office whose law practice is focused on tax and estate planning. He provides a comprehensive range of tax services to corporations, trusts, non-profit organizations and high net worth individuals. Daren advises on domestic and cross border tax planning, business expansion, complex corporate reorganizations, and disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency.
Daren received his Queen’s Counsel designation in 2011. He is a Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner with a particular knowledge of trusts, estate planning, business succession. Daren’s expertise extends to taxation of corporations and their shareholders, creditor limitation strategies and the design and implementation of various tax effective planning strategies.
Daren has been recognized in Best Lawyers™ in Canada since 2009 in the area of Tax Law, and was an advisor on trust law to the Law Reform Commission of Nova Scotia. He received the Best Lawyers 2018 Tax Law “Lawyer of the Year” award in Halifax. Daren is also ranked in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.
Daren is a member and frequent lecturer of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Canadian Bar Association and the Halifax Estate Planning Council. He also speaks regularly on taxation and estate planning at other continuing education programs for various professional bodies.
Daren is serving his second term as an elected member of McInnes Cooper’s Board of Directors and formerly served on the firm’s Pension Committee, Audit Committee and the Governance, Management Compensation Committee.
Daren is an active member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and is currently a vice-president of the Society and a member of Council (the governing body of the Society) and numerous committees. He previously served three consecutive terms as an elected member of Council and is past chair of the Society’s Finance Committee. Daren has formerly held other positions with the Society, including Chair of the Incorporation of Law Firms Committee and Chair of the Limited Liability Partnerships Committee.
Daren served as the Vice Chair of the Nova Scotia Securities Commission for six years and as a member of the commission for 10 years. He is a former member of the Joint Forum of Financial Market Regulators (the forum through which pension, securities and insurance regulators co-ordinate, harmonize and streamline the regulation of financial products and services in Canada), as a representative of the Canadian Securities Administrators.
Daren completed the Directors Education Program offered by the Institute of Corporate Directors and Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He formerly served on the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee of a TSX listed company.
Daren is an avid automobile enthusiast. He currently serves as a Director and the Executive Director of BMW Clubs Canada.
