Joe is Counsel in our Halifax office with a diverse corporate finance and business practice that includes specialized areas such as international transactions, Euro-currency borrowing and lending, privatization and mergers and acquisitions. Joe is recognized on the Best LawyersTM in Canada and Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory for his accomplishments in banking law and corporate law (finance), and has been named Best Lawyers®2020 Banking and Finance Law “Lawyer of the Year” in Halifax. He also has a prestigious AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
As Chair of the Nova Scotia Power Corporation Board, Joe managed its privatization to form Nova Scotia Power Incorporated in 1992. He was responsible for the reorganization of a major trust company and he acted as the principal drafter of the Condominium Act of Nova Scotia. As a member of the Attorney General’s Task Force, he was involved in revising the Securities Act and Regulations and creating the Nova Scotia Securities Commission. He acted as coordinating partner as part of our firm’s long-standing capacity as regional counsel for one of the major chartered banks.
Joe is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, the International Bar Association, and a former member of the Energy Council of Canada and the Canadian Tax Foundation. Joe served on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including the Board of Governors of the IWK Hospital for Children and Mount Saint Vincent University and is past Chair of the Board of the IWK Grace Health Centre.
