Hugh practices with the firm’s Pensions & Benefits Practice Group, and is a leader in Canada’s retirement income industry.
Hugh provides advice to pension plan sponsors, administrators, employee groups and governments in all areas of the pensions and benefits field. He regularly advises pension plan sponsors and administrators concerning pension standards legislation, guidelines, common law requirements, pension governance requirements and pension issues arising from corporate transactions. He acts for administrators, employers and employee groups in pension related litigation. Hugh regularly presents on pension and benefits topics to pension industry groups.
Hugh is listed in Chambers Canada 2018, Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2018) and Lexpert in the area of pensions and benefits law. He has also been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada as Employee Benefits Law “Lawyer of the Year” for Halifax for 2017 and 2020, and has been listed for his practice in Employee Benefits law since 2006.
Hugh is active in various community organizations and was the founding Chair of the firm’s Pro-Bono Committee. He is the inaugural recipient of the CBA Pro Bono VIP Award for contributions to pro bono legal services in Canada.
