McInnes Cooper is saddened to learn of the passing of former partner Joseph A.F. "Joe" Macdonald, K.C., on August 10, 2026, at the age of 83. Joe dedicated nearly six decades of his professional life to the firm and left a lasting impact on colleagues, clients, and the broader legal and business communities.
A Halifax native, Joe earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees from Dalhousie University before completing a Master of Laws degree at New York University. Upon returning to Halifax, he joined McInnes Cooper's predecessor firm in 1967 and became a partner in 1974. Throughout a distinguished legal career spanning more than 50 years, Joe developed a reputation as one of Atlantic Canada's leading corporate, commercial, and finance lawyers. His expertise, sound judgment, and thoughtful counsel earned the respect of clients and peers alike. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1983 in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession.
Joe's influence extended well beyond his legal practice. He generously shared his knowledge with generations of lawyers, serving as a trusted mentor and advisor to many colleagues throughout his career. Those who worked alongside him remember not only his remarkable legal intellect, but also his willingness to support others and contribute to the success of the firm.
Committed to public service, Joe held numerous leadership roles within the community. He served as Chair of Nova Scotia Power and contributed to organizations including Mount Saint Vincent University, the IWK Health Centre, the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, and several charitable and community organizations. His dedication to public service reflected a lifelong commitment to strengthening the institutions and communities he cared about.
Joe will also be remembered for his many personal passions, including gardening, photography, history, sports, and spending time with family and friends. Beneath his often understated and candid manner was a kind, thoughtful, and generous individual who was deeply respected by those who knew him. We extend our sincere condolences to Joe's wife of 59 years, Linda, his children Charles and Georgette, his grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joe's funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Saint Agnes Church in Halifax, with a reception to follow. A donation to the IWK or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
