Why McInnes Cooper?

In a nation-wide survey, McInnes Cooper was rated by its associates as one of the top firms to work for in Canada.

  • Some say it’s our reputation.
  • Some say it’s the world class clients, and regional, national and international files.
  • Others say it’s our supportive environment and open door policy.
  • Some sat it’s our committment to diversity and inclusion and collective social responsibility.
  • Whatever the reason, 100% of our associates polled said they would recommend McInnes Cooper as a place to work.

Come find out why.

At McInnes Cooper, first and second year law students have first hand exposure to the life of a practicing lawyer in busy law firm. Students are assigned to a specific lawyer for each month of the summer and depending on their areas of interest, have exposure to business, litigation, and labour and employment law. This allows each student an opportunity to see how lawyers in our firm actually practice law on a daily basis, instead of merely performing research. Our students comment that they were pleasantly surprised by the variety of projects they were involved in as well as the level of responsibility they get under the supervision of the firm’s lawyers. The student program is less formal than the articling program at McInnes Cooper, but we still ensure students receive feedback through the lawyers they work with as well as regular evaluations. Each lawyer to whom a student is assigned is responsible for ensuring feedback is received.

Students who have taken part in our summer program have found the experience to be stimulating and helpful in their choice of subjects for the following school year. Most have continued with McInnes Cooper for their articles and have joined the firm as associates and have continued on to become partners of the firm.

The student experience allows the students to immediately feel like a member of the firm and not just a student from Day One.

McInnes Cooper’s Diversity and Inclusion program is designed to create and maintain a workplace culture in which difference is recognized, valued and celebrated, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute to their full potential – as themselves.

The program is not a side project or an afterthought. Rather, diversity and inclusion considerations are woven into every aspect of the firm’s strategy and operations. The program is led by the firm’s senior leadership, and by a diversity and inclusion advisory committee comprised of firm members that represent the cultural and geographic diversity of the firm and the communities we serve. The program’s multi-year action plan has measurable outcomes, and focuses on areas including recruitment, training, workplace policies and procedures, and community engagement.

The firm’s Collective Social Responsibility (CSR) program, similar to the diversity program, is not a “one off” project. Rather, CSR is part of our fabric and culture. Through the program, the firm partners with various community groups through monetary support and devotion of time. All firm members have the opportunity to participate in CSR initiatives. Each year, students and articled clerks work on a CSR project of their own creation, and it is always one of the highlights of the year.
