About Richard J.
Richard is Counsel in our Fredericton office. His practice focuses on legal research to resolve complex legal issues in all practice areas, in both substantive and procedural matters, and on appellate advocacy. He is an experienced advocate before the New Brunswick Court of Appeal for clients of the firm and as counsel to other lawyers. Best Lawyers in Canada has recently recognized Richard in the practice area of appellate law.
Richard has a B.B.A. and LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick. He has been a part-time lecturer there in various commercial law related courses for 25 years in both the Faculties of Law and Engineering. In addition, this year he is teaching Professional Conduct in the Faculty of Law. He is a member of the Canadian Association for Legal Ethics and a member of the Ethics Committee of the Law Society of New Brunswick.
Richard has played an active role in the governance of the Law Society of New Brunswick and is currently serving his 8th year on its governing Council. He served as President of the Law Society – Bâtonnier du Nouveau Brunswick in 2012-2013. He is a former member of the Law Society’s Audit and Risk Management, Examining, Executive and Provincial Libraries Committees.
He is a member of the statutory rules committee under the New Brunswick Judicature Act, of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal Bar Liaison Committee, and of the National Advisory Committee of the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute and Chairperson of its Atlantic Regional Committee. He is a public representative on the governing Council of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII).
Active in his community, Richard is a former President of the UNB Alumni Association and is a former member of UNB’s Board of Governors and Academic Senates.
