Peter is counsel in our Calgary office. Peter was formally regional lead partner at McInnes Cooper for the region. Peter’s practice has evolved into large scale class action litigation as lead counsel in the Supreme Court case, Manuge v. Her Majesty The Queen, resulting in the recovery of approximately $900 million dollars for over 8000 disabled former members of the Canadian Forces. In addition, Peter is counsel in the matter of White v. Her Majesty The Queen, a similar action to Manuge seeking the recovery of disability benefits wrongly offset from benefits payable to disabled former members of the RCMP. Peter also initiated the class action of King v. The Province of Nova Scotia ultimately resulting in the return of monies to participants in the Nova Scotia Immigrant Nominee Program. Peter’s most recent success was to be named Atlantic Litigator of the Year. He is also listed in Benchmark Canada 2015 under as Class Action, and Commercial law Provincial Litigation Star.
Peter’s practice has led to appearances in all levels of Court including the Supreme Court of Canada and he has recently been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for his practice in Class Action Litigation. He is also the Chair of the McInnes Cooper Class Action Practice Group which advises both Plaintiffs and Defendants alike on class proceedings. Peter regularly presents to class action industry groups and is a regular participant in the annual Osgoode Hall National Symposiums on Class Actions.
As former in-house counsel to a national benefits consulting firm, Peter also has extensive experience advising employers, trustees and members with respect to pension and benefit issues and is a key member of McInnes Cooper’s pension and benefit group. Representative work includes counsel to the Atlantic Police Association in the matter of Amherst et al v. The Trustees of PANS, a decision of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal securing solvency funding for the benefit of the PANS Pension Plan.
