Chip Sutherland is a health and innovation lawyer at our Halifax office. Chip is also a leading entertainment and media lawyer whose experience across all areas of the music industry has contributed to his whole-of-business approach to the law. He develops creative, flexible legal solutions to help clients achieve their business goals.
In his health law practice, Chip represents both doctors and hospitals in an institutional and individual capacity as corporate counsel particularly in the field of innovation and commercialization. Most recently, he was retained by the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax to oversee the development and commercialization of all innovation based projects.
Chip is also acknowledged for his excellence in the field of education law. He has co-authored many works with A. Wayne MacKay, including the third edition of the important text Teachers and the Law: A Practical Guide for Educators.
Chip is well-known across Canada as a music industry leader. He has represented countless well-known musicians, such as Sloan and Feist. Chip has been nationally recognized for his work as the architect and executive director of the Radio Starmaker Fund. He has also co-authored the Canadian version of the best-selling music industry text All You Need to Know About the Music Business with Donald Passman.
In his spare time, he is an avid fly fisherman and wild habitat conservationist. He has traveled the world fishing in some of the most famous rivers of Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand and Iceland, although he is always happiest on rivers closer to home.
