Profile

John is a Partner in our St. John’s office. John enjoys practicing general corporate and commercial law with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, securities and related matters. He was listed in Best Lawyers in Canada (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) for his practice of Alternate Dispute Resolution, Banking Law, Corporate Law and Real Estate Law. Lexpert Magazine also noted his as a Leading Practitioner in Banking and Finance Law. He represents provincial, national and international clients. In securities matters, he represents venture capital investors, private placement companies and publicly listed issuers and has acted for underwriters. A significant part of his practice is also in the oil and gas, mining and forestry sectors.

John has been an active member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Newfoundland. For over twenty years, he chaired the Law Society’s Business Section Bar Admission Program. He commented and reviewed on Newfoundland’s Corporations Act as a member of the Law Society review committee and he chaired a similar committee that examined the Province’s Securities Act. He also served as a member of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Executive.

John is a Director of BOT Capital Project Inc., a corporation established by the St. John’s Board of Trade to encourage Angel investors. He served previously as President of the St. John’s Rotary Club, Chair of the Board of the predecessor of the College of the North Atlantic and Chair of the Memorial University Art Gallery Board.

Atlantic Canadians received more good news on the energy sector front with the finalization of 20 months of detailed contractual negotiations between Nalcor Energy and Emera Inc. Nalcor CEO Ed Martin stated the 1,500 page contract between Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia "creates flexibility to maximize any surplus power and represents a strong partnership
