Halifax, NS – McInnes Cooper Counsel and immediate past Board Chair George Cooper, C.M., C.D., QC, has been selected by The University of King’s College as its interim president, the college announced today. Dr. Cooper’s appointment will be for two years to give the university time to find a replacement for Dr. Anne Leavitt, who resigned on June 21, 2012.
Dr. Cooper, who holds an honorary doctorate from King’s, is also the immediate past chair of the King’s board of governors. He is a Rhodes Scholar, the managing trustee of the Killam Educational Trust, and a former chair of the Canada/US Fulbright Scholarship Foundation.
Dr. Cooper is Counsel with McInnes Cooper, working primarily from the firm’s Halifax office. He practices corporate and commercial law, and has acted as lead counsel in the negotiation of major industrial, commercial and services contracts in and out of Nova Scotia. He represents companies in the forest, mining, rail, energy and related fields, and has been recognized by Lexpert Magazine’s Leading Practitioners lists for Corporate and Commercial Law, and by Best Lawyers in Canada for Energy Regulatory Law and Corporate Law.
“We are delighted for George,” says McInnes Cooper Managing Partner Bernie Miller. “Our lawyers have been involved in advancing the region’s education sector for many years, so this is a natural fit – especially for George.”
Dr. Cooper will continue to be associated with the firm and will be returning to the full time practice of law upon completion of this interim appointment. Arrangements have been made to ensure clients’ needs will be fully met during this time.
