At McInnes Cooper, we are committed to reducing the impact that our operations have on the environment.
Since 2009, our Environmental Working Group has implemented initiatives including:
Eliminating bottled water;
Installing energy efficient and motion sensitive lights;
Recycling paper, plastic, batteries and cartridges;
Purchasing reusable dishes and cutlery;
Eliminating Styrofoam products;
Utilizing video conference software that helps reduce the need for business travel;
Donating retired cellular devices to charities throughout the region; and
Using environmentally certified cleaning products.
In celebration of Earth Day 2012, McInnes Cooper is launching some exciting new initiatives to help further reduce our impact on the environment.
As a law firm, it’s not surprising that copy paper is the single greatest source of waste produced by our offices. While we recycle whatever we can, we are committed to significantly reducing our paper consumption.
In 2011, we achieved a 12.4 per cent reduction in paper purchases compared to the year before. But we’re not stopping there. We aim to decreasing our paper output by another 7.5 per cent, by simply double-siding 20 per cent of our print jobs. We’ve provided instructions on how to set printer defaults to duplex, and we’re challenging our members to make the switch.
We also know that one quarter of our carbon footprint is attributable to the commuting practices of our members. To get people thinking about alternative forms of transportation, we’re offering our members incentives, such as subsidized transit passes and memberships to CarShare Halifax. We also encourage our members to consider active transportation whenever possible.
We will continue to look for ways to reduce our environmental footprint, and we commend our members for the changes they have made to help us reach that goal.
